A Few Tips on Tipping
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, Was I supposed to leave a tip?… you know how uncomfortable this situation can be.
After all, if tipping is not customary but you offer one, you risk an awkward refusal. On the other hand, if tipping is customary and you fail to leave one, you look like a disgruntled customer – or worse!
To spare you this discomfort, here are some basic guidelines on tipping, sorted by occasion. With a quick review, you’ll never again have to fret over something so simple as a gratuity.
Restaurants:
- Tip bartenders 15-20% (before taxes), depending on the service.
- For a wine steward or sommelier, tip 5-10% of the wine bottle’s price if you’ve received special service.
- Tip your waitperson 15% (before tax is added) for good service and 20% for great service. Alternatively, for great service, tip 15% on the total amount (after tax is added).
- Rest Room Attendants: $1
- It is not mandatory to tip strolling musicians in restaurants. However, if you enjoyed their music, they appreciate receiving a gratuity.
Hotels:
- It is not customary to tip doormen for taking your bag out of the car. However, if they bring your bag inside the hotel or up to the room, a tip is warranted.
